A 1 hr 45 min ferry from New London, Connecticut to the South Fork of Long Island
|Purpose: To promote a vehicle
ferry service between Connecticut and the South Fork of Long Island: to
achieve a more efficient traffic pattern for the East End.
Benefits: South Fork residents benefit by having three ferry trips per crossing consolidated into one, reducing travelers' time to less than two hours from the present four to five hours. Resulting traffic would be in the opposite direction for most Montauk Highway traffic during peak transient travel times. Residents in Orient, East Marion, Greenport, Shelter Island, North Haven, and Sag Harbor would be relieved of transient traffic bound for or originating in the South Fork that overloads their roads and ferries. Noise, air pollution and congestion would be diminished; cars would be moved by ferry rather than by road.
Terminal Location: The dilapidated and dangerous fish factory land off Promised Land Road in Napeague State Park, Amagansett. An old railroad right of way runs directly south to the Montauk Highway, avoiding any residential neighborhoods or sensitive wetlands. Terminal rentals from Cross Sound Ferry could be used to reclaim the Park for public use.
