| Opponents of the South Fork Ferry speak eloquently of the devastation
that would be wrought to the "pristine and fragile" near shore land of
the Napeague State Park in Amagansett if a ferry terminal were place in
the Promised Land. In addition to the abandoned buildings and piers pictured
here, there is an railroad right of way (with tracks still in place) which
could be used to take traffic directly from the terminal to Montauk Highway,
speeding travelers East to Montauk or West to East Hampton and beyond.
A new ferry terminal would replace these dangerous eye sores, and rent
to the State for the use of this corner of Napeague Park would allow for
the area to be upgraded for use by the public.
