The purpose  of the Shelter Island Deer and Tick Foundation is to assist the Town of Shelter Island by raising funds to cover the costs of acquiring and maintaining baiting stands (4-Posters) to apply insecticide to deer so as to reduce the risk of tick-borne diseases. The Foundation was granted 501(c)(3) not-profit status by the IRS on August 19, 2006.

The Island may require as many as 80 4-Poster systems, and each costs $425. Maintenance of each one, over a year's period, is between $500 and $600. If properly managed, the tick population of the Island should be reduced by over 90% after three years.

Contributions may be made by making your check payable to the Shelter island Deer and Tick Management Foundation and sent to the Treasurer, Patricia Shillingburg, at PO Box 3032, Shelter Island Heights, NY 11965.
